What Actually Helps Kids Succeed in Martial Arts (A Note to Parents)
We get a lot of families walking through the doors of our Barrie dojo looking for a martial arts school. Usually, it's a parent hoping that karate will help their child build a little discipline and confidence. Sometimes, it’s the kid who dragged their parents in because they just really want to learn.
Honestly, I love it when the kid is the one leading the charge. But whether it's the parent's idea or the child's, you can never really guess on day one who is going to stick with it when the training gets tough.

Importance of Parental Support
I’ve been teaching martial arts for over 35 years, and if I’ve noticed one thing, it’s this: the biggest factor in a kid's success isn't natural talent. It's parental support.
And by support, I don't just mean paying the monthly fee and driving them to the dojo. I mean taking an active interest in their journey. You don't have to sit and watch every single class, but being in the loop makes a massive difference.
Engagement and Motivation
It’s about knowing when they have a grading session, a seminar or a tournament coming up. It’s asking them what they worked on during the drive home. Ask them to show you a new block or stance in the living room. Kids love that. They want to show off for you, and they crave that genuine interest. When kids feel like you care about what they're doing on the mats, they naturally want to push harder.
On our end, we give everything we have to motivate and inspire the students. We push them, we correct their mistakes, and we praise them—but only when they actually earn it. That is just how Kyokushin Karate works. But we only have them for a couple of hours a week. The rest of the time, they take their cues from you. Having your support at home is the missing piece of the puzzle.
I’m sharing this just as a friendly observation from spending most of my life teaching. Karate is technically an individual activity, but getting to the higher levels takes a solid dojo, a teacher who cares, and a family that takes an interest.

Our Approach in Barrie
If you are tired of the participation trophy mindset and want a school that actually focuses on building resilience and real confidence, we might be a good fit for your family.
We take a very grounded approach at Contact Kicks. We don't hand out belts just to keep people happy, and we run a completely transparent school at 101 Ardagh Road. You won't find any high-pressure sales pitches here, and we don't lock anyone into long-term contracts.
We also have a standing family rule to encourage everyone to get involved: if you enroll two or more of your children, the parents are welcome to train for free. Stepping onto the dojo yourself is a pretty great way to show them you’re invested.
Stop by the dojo or book a trial class through our website. We would love to meet you and see what your child can do.
