Why We Don't Do Contracts, Hidden Fees, or Fast Belts

Honest Martial Arts Training in Barrie & Mississauga

A parent walked into our Barrie dojo recently with their guard completely up, expecting a heavy sales pitch. They’d just spent an hour at another local martial arts school where the trial ended with an ultimatum: pay hundreds upfront today, sign a mandatory twelve-month contract, or your child can’t step on the mat.

They were genuinely surprised when I told them we don’t operate that way.

Commitment Comes From Within, Not a Contract

Real commitment comes from within, not a finance agreement. If the coaching is honest, the training is solid, and the community is supportive, people stay. Our drop-out rate is low because students see real progress. Forcing a family to pay for months of unused classes because life got busy isn't discipline—it's just bad business.

Transparent Pricing & Zero Markup

That’s why our rates are right on our website for anyone to see before they drive to Ardagh Road in Barrie or Royal Windsor Drive in Mississauga. We keep it simple.

That covers your first month and a clean uniform, so there are no equipment markups on day one. And if two of your kids are training with us, parents train for free. We want families active, not doing math every time someone wants to work out. You should know if our school fits your budget before walking in.

Belts Are Earned, Not Purchased

The same honesty applies to grading. The big commercial martial arts world is notorious for surprise testing fees and guaranteed belts just to keep revenue flowing. Turning rank into a retail purchase ruins the art.

When your child earns a belt here, they actually earned it. Our testing costs are minimal, and students only test when they know their syllabus and show the right character—respect, humility, and the grit to push through discomfort. If a student isn't ready, we help them get there instead of handing them a belt just because the calendar flipped.

The Real Timeline to Black Belt

We tell parents and students that a black belt takes time at our dojo. We aren't handing them out after two years of training or to 10-year-olds like some large commercial schools do.

  • Minimum Age: Students must be at least 14 years old to be eligible to test for Black Belt.

  • Timeline: In Kyokushin Karate, even with hard training and passing all gradings, it takes 6 to 8+ years to reach Black Belt.

  • The Result: A beginner or intermediate student in Kyokushin is often at a higher level than those in other styles simply because they've trained longer and harder.

We know that's a shock for some, but we lay it out upfront. Those who stay know exactly what they're signing up for. It isn't magic, just common sense. In a fast-paced world, we slow things down, but we build them better along the way.

Built on Sweat, Not Marketing

Operating this way means we probably won't turn into a massive franchise packed with hundreds of students cycling through a revolving door. I am completely fine with that. I would much rather run a room full of dedicated, grounded people who are here because they love the work, trust their instructors, and know that every single stripe on their belt was earned with honest sweat.
