Though jiu-jitsu contains stand-up maneuvers, it is most famous for its devastating ground-fighting techniques. Gaining superior positioning—so one can apply the style’s numerous chokes, holds, locks and joint manipulations on an opponent—is the key in jiu-jits.
Jiu-jitsu's roots began in the early 1900s in Brazil with the Gracie family. The most famous of the Gracie family was Helio, who adjusted the techniques to suit his small frame, thereby creating Brazilian jiu-jitsu. The art has become immensely popular, mostly through the UFC.
The overall fighting strategy of jiu-jitsu is designed to equip a physically smaller or weaker individual with an effective method of defending against a larger and stronger attacker, which has made it very popular with women. Jiu-jitsu also has the most developed methods of fighting while on one's back, a position many people will often find themselves in, if or when, attacked.
