FAQ

    How long does it take to get a black belt?
Each student progresses at their own pace. The more a student chooses to train and practice, the quicker he/she will move through the system. On average, it takes 5-7 years to achieve the rank of black belt.

   What is the difference between Kyokushin Karate and other Karate styles ?
Kyokushin Karate was founded as a full-contact martial art and focuses and the fighting aspects of Karate , as opposed to other non-contact point system fighting Karate styles.

   Do you teach  private lessons?
We  do offer private classes for students interested in the kickboxing, fitness and conditioning aspects only . No private classes for karate student.

   What is a belt test, and do I have to do that?
A belt test usually is held every four months. The student is asked to demonstrate all the  techniques , basic strikes and blocks associated with that belt. Instructors will schedule a student to test only when he/she is ready, and have already proven a solid understanding of the requirements. The belt tests are only required if the student is interested in progressing through the Kyokushin system and wants to achieve rank.

   Do you teach any other martial arts?
At Contact Kicks dojo we teach Kyokushin Karate and Kickboxing. However we often have seminars conducted by instructors from other martial arts like  Brazilian ju-jitsu for example.

  Do you teach MMA (Mixed Martial Arts)?
We are not specialized in training fighters for MMA type of competition, however we do teach stand up fighting adapted to MMA rules and advance body conditioning for professional fighters.

  Will I get injured doing karate?
Injuries can occur anytime when one does a physical activity. When running , you can sprain your ankle , when biking you can fall and hurt yourself , and examples can go on and on. Practicing martial arts it's not injuries free either, but training your body makes you stronger and healthier. It is a proven fact that the level of fitness can increase your ability to fight illnesses and recovery from any accidents you may sustain .

 
How many group classes can I attend?
 You can attend as many group classes as you want . There is no limit or additional charge.

  Do you offer family rates?
Yes, there are several ways families can combine their training. We are honored that you and your family choose our dojo , therefore  we offer great rates for family members.

  I am nervous around others and often embarrassed. Will I feel that way at your dojo ?
We encourage a friendly and laid back atmosphere. We have all levels of martial arts and fitness-focused students, and we have the proper respect and consideration to everyone.

  Will I have to spar/fight with other people?
Sparring is part of our Karate style, however , it is practiced under strict supervision and with protective gear. One can not learn a martial art without real contact - just like you can't tell how an orange taste unless you eat it first.

  Do I have to be in shape first ?
No.  For students interested in the fitness side, training martial arts  can be used to get you into shape - you can start at your own pace and build your conditioning to your own timetable.

  I have a belt in another art. Do I have to start over?
Yes. Each martial art has their own system of belts and colored ranks. If you have a belt in a karate style that is related to Kyokushin Karate , you may keep your rank and re-test it once again if necessary after you learned the differences in techniques and kata.

  Would I need to buy any equipment?
Students interested in kickboxing are strongly encouraged to purchase boxing gloves to protect their hands. If students are interested in sparring, some other protective gear is required like mouthpieces, shin pads, cup/jock, etc. For karate students a karate uniform ( dogi ) is necessary

  Will this style help me lose weight and develop stronger physique?
Absolutely.  Our group classes include various cardio and strength building activities. We strive to keep them different day to day, and week to week , offering well-rounded fitness and fun.

  Can you help with discipline and confidence building?
Yes. As students develop the physical side of martial arts, they also inherently develop a more disciplined outlook.

 
Are group classes segregated by rank or experience?
Yes. We have kids and adults classes , also beginner and advance classes.

 
Do you participate in tournaments ?
Yes. We do participate in karate and kickboxing tournaments.
